FROM HEART VALVE TO HUMAN ANTIBODY

The success of unique public-private partnerships

AMSTERDAM, 2008-07-19

Something extraordinary is happening in the Netherlands. The business community, knowledge centers and government agencies are combining forces in high-quality research in the Life Sciences. These partnerships are unique in form and scale, joint investments of great importance for the economy and society.

Public-private partnerships like TI Pharma, BMM, CTMM and NGI are working on pioneering advances in innovative medicines, diagnostic tests, individualized medication and treatment methods, biomedical materials and genetic research. In addition, the innovation program Life Sciences & Health (LSG) is accelerating the translation of knowledge into economic and social benefits. The aim of LSG is to increase the number of research-oriented companies dramatically over the next ten years, double the turnover of this sector and realize concrete innovations for clinics and patients through research.

The Netherlands is thus making a major contribution to a better future. The collaboration between academia, industry and the government is admired around the world. The combinations of large and small companies, engineers and doctors, pharmacists and biologists, geneticists and nutritionists, philosophers and economists are bearing surprising fruit.

In this booklet, you will encounter several concrete examples of ambitious research projects in-progress in the various public-private partnerships.

Projects which could give the Netherlands a leading international position in the Life Sciences. Ambitions which will improve the quality of life. Examples to be proud of, the forerunners of many more.
