RESEARCH

The human body has an amazing ability to repair itself. But sometimes tissues or organs become so damaged that the body cannot heal on its own. We then have to resort to prostheses, to radical, often unpleasant revision surgery, to medication we ordinarily would not take or painful therapies.

However, now that we understand more about the body’s ability to repair itself – the discovery of stem cells was a tremendous step in that direction - science and technology make it possible to give the body a helping hand with radically new biomaterials. That is where BMM comes in.

Which innovations are involved? Ideas currently under consideration include new but native heart valves, methods to administer medicines exactly where they are needed or to fight bacteria, ingenious materials that attract stem cells and instruct them to grow new tissues, a portable artificial kidney, proteins that repair damaged bone or cartilage or put a stop to chronic disorders once and for all. Each one is an example of pioneering innovation that improves people’s lives.

We encourage research activities in the area of common diseases and technologies that can provide a solution. The projects have been chosen based on scientific quality and social, clinical and economic value. In a unique effort, leading investigators in technology, clinical scientists and specialists from the field have joined forces, contributing to accelerated research and lowering costs by sharing knowledge and experiences. We are also engaged in training new generations of young researchers.

BMM is a collaboration between companies, knowledge institutes, medical doctors, the Netherlands Heart Foundation, the Dutch Kidney Foundation and the Dutch Arthritis Foundation. Intensive collaboration serves the interests of the patient, improves the quality and cost position of healthcare and is a boost for the Netherlands, which has been developing as a leading player in innovative biomaterials.

Much research still needs to be done. Not every research project will ultimately lead to commercially viable products. Nevertheless, we are on the threshold of revolutionary innovations that will make a substantive difference for man and society. BMM is putting its heart and soul into it.
